The Philippines Turn Greener: Two Projects, One Message
From Manila to Kalibo: Starkmacher Impact is writing two success stories in the Philippines at once.
In the Philippines, something remarkable is happening when impact investing, church commitment, and local vision come together. Two projects, one shared mission.
Focolare Carpentry, Manila
The Focolare Movement's vocational carpentry workshop in Manila has trained disadvantaged youth for decades. Rising energy costs were threatening the financial foundation of the operation. Financed through a soft loan from impact investor Weltkirche of the Archdiocese of Cologne, 174 solar panels (95.7 kWp) were installed. The annual savings flow into repayment of the loan, feeding the Starkmacher Impact Revolving Fund (SMIRF) for future projects, while a share already benefits local youth work directly. The results:
- 121,000 kWh of clean electricity per year
- covering 84% of energy needs
- 71 tonnes of CO₂ reduced annually.
Not a lost grant, but a cycle that delivers lasting impact.
Santo Niño Seminary, Kalibo
Equally impressive is the story of Santo Niño Seminary in the Diocese of Kalibo. An institution that carried six-figure monthly electricity bills for years is now producing enough solar energy to bring its bill to zero, with credits earned in sunnier months offsetting consumption during cloudier ones.
"Every peso saved can now support the formation of future priests and the mission of the Church," says Mary Ann, founder of Starkmacher Impact Philippines. "This project is about much more than electricity savings, it is about stewardship of our common home."
Here too, the Archdiocese of Cologne made the financing possible. The next project, in the Diocese of San Carlos, is already underway.
Impact³: Ecological, Social, Economic
All three projects embody our Impact³ principle: church institutions don't just become more climate-friendly, they gain the financial room to focus on their true mission. A greener Church, a more sustainable future.
