Power-to-X in Practice (Kenya): How Solar Energy Decarbonizes a Coffee Farm and Supplies a Hospital with Oxygen
At Starkmacher Impact (SMI), we invest in solutions that solve more than one problem. Together with UNIDO and the Project Development Programme (PDP) of the German Energy Solutions Initiative, implemented by GIZ, and through an innovative blended finance concept together with the @Archdiocese of Cologne, we are supporting a pioneering project at Nyeri Hill Farm in Kenya. Here, "added value" is redefined through modern sector coupling.
⚙️ The PtX Logic
- Process: Solar power from a PV plant splits water into green hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis.
- X = Green Fertilizer: Hydrogen is processed into carbon-neutral ammonia on-site, making the farm 100% independent of fossil imports.
- X = Medical Oxygen: The byproduct - pure oxygen - is captured to save lives at the local Consolata Hospital.
🌟 Why it’s Impact³: SDGs & "Laudato Si in Action"
1. Ecological: A measurable contribution to climate action and clean energy by decarbonizing agriculture.
2. Social: This is solidarity in action. It doesn't just secure the local medical oxygen supply; it serves as a Knowledge Hub for other dioceses in the Global South to utilize their own resources like sun and land to support their important work.
3. Economic: Our finance structure ensures production costs remain significantly below current and future external procurement costs. This creates independence from volatile global market prices and acts as an Impact Multiplier, allowing capital to be reinvested into our Starkmacher Impact Revolving Fund (SMIRF) for further social projects.

This Impact³ approach serves as a blueprint for the Global South. It demonstrates how "Solidarity in Action" creates economic resilience and technical know-how that can be transferred to other communities, ensuring long-term security and environmental protection.
