Power-to-X in Kenya: How Solar Energy Decarbonizer Farming and Saves Lives

“Seeds of Energy” – under this name, the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri in Kenya celebrates the successful completion of a landmark solar project. In partnership with Starkmacher Impact (SMI), an infrastructure has been created that delivers much more than just electricity: it is the engine for green industry, food security, and medical care.

Fast Facts

  • Capacity: 34 decentralized PV units across the Archdiocese.
  • Output: Approx. 1.1 million kWh of clean energy per year.
  • Decarbonization: Transitioning Nyeri Hill Farm to climate-neutral production.
  • Environmental Impact: Saving up to 900 metric tonnes of CO₂ annually.
  • Innovation: Sector coupling through green hydrogen and oxygen production.

Sector Coupling in Practice: The PtX Logic

The project at Nyeri Hill Farm redefines the concept of "added value." Here, solar energy is not just used for lighting but is converted into chemical energy carriers (Power-to-X):

  1. Green Fertilizer (Ammonia): Using solar power, water is split into hydrogen via electrolysis and processed on-site into green ammonia. This makes the farm 100% independent of expensive, fossil-based fertilizer imports.

  2. Medical Grade Oxygen: The byproduct of electrolysis—pure oxygen—is captured to save lives at the local Consolata Hospital.

  3. Laudato Si Paradise: A 200-acre parcel designated for biodiversity restoration and environmental education.

A Celebration of Collaboration

In a festive ceremony, the project was commissioned by Her Excellency Zainab Hawa Bangura (UN Director-General in Nairobi) and blessed by Most Rev. Archbishop Anthony Muheria. This project is a prime example of international cooperation: together with UNIDO, the GIZ Project Development Programme (PDP), and technical leadership under Dr. Eng. Joseph K. Njoroge, the vision became reality.

Visionary Financing: The SMIRF

The financial foundation was an innovative blended finance concept in partnership with the Archdiocese of Cologne. Through the Starkmacher Impact Revolving Fund (SMIRF), the saved energy costs flow back into the fund to repay the investment while simultaneously strengthening local social programs.

“We invest in solutions that solve more than just one problem. Nyeri demonstrates how modern sector coupling can decarbonize economies in the Global South.” — Joseph Mwaura, MD Starkmacher Impact Africa
